This was compiled by Arland Whitfield, an iSchool student and a fellow 4th floor DellPlain resident. He's from Los Angeles (Cali swag!) so we'll both freeze in the approaching winter season. Oh, the perks of being a Californian. Arland is a gadget guy. He is very technologically savvy and, hey, you know me; I just gotta take advantage of the talent around me. This blog post is dedicated to my high school AP Government and Politics teacher. This is also for prospective communications majors.
I am a month and a half into my freshman year in college and I have my first Communications and Media exam tomorrow. The last few days have been full of studying and power naps, not stress and feelings of overwhelmed dispair (thank goodness).
Here is the important part of this blog: I love what I am studying.
My recent studies in COM 107 is all about the government and media. Fortunately, I have a solid grasp on the court cases thanks to AP GoPo in high school. It's all prior restraint, censorship, sedition, libel, slander, court cases, gag orders, etc., and I am simply loving it. The cool thing about college is that the text books are MUCH MORE FUN TO READ. I don't ever recall enjoying textbooks. In high school, I found joy in pointing out all the errors in literature textbooks. Now, the subject matter is where it's at.
Media and Culture with 2013 Update: An Introduction to Mass Communication.
By Richard Campbell.
The great thing about studying communications (for me, at least) is that I get it. I'm pretty sure I understand it so well because I enjoy every aspect of the course. Major kudos go to my professor (who will remain unidentified so I am not labeled as a weird prof-guru) who is so freaking passionate about what he is teaching. He's so full of reason and truth that I leave lectures inspired rather than worn out or dazed. He reminds me of my high school teacher, who always was so stoked about government and politics that she would speak very loudly and gesticulate wildly when it came to ridiculous court cases and prominent historical figures. Teachers need to be organized, enthusiastic, and hilarious in order to be effective. Truth.
Now I hope you all don't find me completely nerdy after that loving spiel. Onwards to college updates!
- My parents sent me more pants in the mail! It's hard to survive with only 3 pairs of pants.
- I have reached 831 tweets on Twitter, and I still don't get it. #SocialMediaRox
- Watched "Looper" with 12 friends. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis... I have no words.
- I have pep band practice tonight. Being in band again completes me.
- Got interviewed with my fellow Breezeway Cafe managers of Orange Television Network. Stay tuned for that.
