Oswegatchie, CIE, and the Idea Connectors
Round Lake before breakfast
At the amphitheater
We all slept in a community bunk room, which reminded me of jail, but the unity was fantastic. Here are a list of activities that we got into.
- Failed bonfires- Note to unexperienced campers: moist kindling does not catch fire.
A more successful campfire attempt
- Low ropes courses- These included mini team obstacle courses in the middle of the woods where we exercised physical and mental balance, communication, and teamwork.
Island hopping with the guys
- High ropes courses- Like to climb stuff? Everyone was strapped into harnesses (whether they liked it or not) and we hit the woods to scale 40-foot telephone poles, scurry up stapled trees, and zip across the lake on the zip line. Talk about a major adrenaline rush.

- Sardines- This is a pretty popular game that is a cooler version of hide and go seek. One person hides and everyone else seeks. Once a you find the person who is hiding, you hide along with them and so forth. Everyone ends up hiding in one spot and the last person to find them is a loser. Just kidding! But really though.
- Crazy board games- Check out DiXit. It's like Balderdash. Crazy stuff.
- Morning Hikes- On our last night at Oswegatchie, our camp leader took the entire crew on a hike to Trout Falls. It was foamy and beautiful. I didn't want to go home.
Peace and love at Trout Falls
Here's a little college tip: Get outside into the woods whenever you have a chance. It is so refreshing to be in a quiet environment away from all forms of technology. Don't get me wrong, I love the internet but a little break every once in a while is so healthy.
The crew!
Jesse Tyler Ferguson at SU!
So stoked!
There are way too many celebrities coming to SU. The guy that plays Mitchell from ABC's "Modern Family" came to SU to talk about his experience in the entertainment business as a gay man. The event was sponsored by University Union and the LGBTQ Center on campus.
"Use your voice for something positive and get the good stuff out there." -JTF
Ferguson’s visit to campus was a very effective public relations tactic. As a successful gay celebrity, Ferguson made a public appearance representing ABC, the LGBTQ community, his and his partner’s organization, Tie the Knot (which sells bowties to raise funds for various organizations that are support civil rights for gay Americans), and those with interest in mainstream entertainment. His presence contributed to a good reputation for all of these groups.
Newhouse Career Day
Newhouse holds Career Day every year for freshmen and undecided students within the college. Newhouse has 8 majors: Newspaper and Online Journalism, Journalism Photography, Graphic Design, Advertising, Public Relations, Broadcasting Digital Journalism, Television/Radio/Film, and Magazine. Various alumni in the respective fields are a part of an interview panel (moderated by an SU professor) and they talk about their jobs.
A big part of these panels (for me, at least) was seeing how each of these professionals represented the major and their profession. I felt that the Advertising panel did an excellent job of representing their profession and it has definitely been a contributing factor to my staying with ADV.
There are major advising sessions later on next week. These sessions are presentations by department chairs and professors to talk and take questions about their major. More on that later.
"Jersey Boys" at the Landmark Theatre
After a long week of academic soul searching, Jay and I scored some tickets to "Jersey Boys" in downtown Syracuse. I forgot how much I enjoyed having some musical theater in my life. The Landmark Theatre is pretty darn nice and we got left center ground floor tickets. Major win! Oh what a night it was indeed. This is truly American music. There's nothing like snazzily dressed men who can sing like angels.
One of my faves
The taxi ride back proved to be very interesting. Our driver, Mr. Kenny, told us his stories about how he drove Selena Gomez around in a stretch limo to go shopping in New York City. He also told us how he married an FBI agent and that he's the head of a kickboxing arena downtown. Wizard!
Midnight at the Graveyard
At the entrance
As soon as Jay and I got back from "Jersey Boys," we met up with Johnny, Daisy, James, and Vivian (yeah, roomie love) to have a Halloweekend of our own.
Daisy led the way to the graveyard (apparently she hangs out there a lot, I dunno) and we took a hike around.
It was 1 in the morning but the clouds in the sky reflected the lights from downtown so it was pretty bright in the graveyard. We could actually see the green of the grass. It was both thrilling and
nauseating at the same time.
What is that..
We got home at 3AM.
Psh, we had to stop at the Dome first.
