I'm Back, Back in Town

Three cheers from the Orange school! I'm back, y'all.

I got back yesterday at noon, and after showering, unpacking, and a lovely Ernie Davis dinner, I slept into Saturday. Good thing too, because I had five hours of Sour Sitrus Society ahead of me. Back to work, right away!

MEN: SU vs. VILLANOVA 71-62 (W)
WOMEN: SU vs. GEORGETOWN 86-56 (W)

It's nice to be back on campus. While on break, a fellow floor mate of mine filmed a short video of him trudging through knee-deep snow. When I got to Syracuse, it was warmer that it was in California and there was dirty clumps of snow scattered around campus. Disappointing. But there is definitely more to come.

Wendy and I usually kick off the semester with mad bonding time doing crazy SU sponsored events. We ended up catching a bus that went a little past downtown to the bowling alley for some Xtreme bowling.
Bowling with Yaskira, Betsy (Dr. Speer), and Wendy (Bob Nuggs, obviously)

I just realized how violent this looks.
It was an adventurous night! College is meant for getting yourself into strange situations that end up into great stories to tell later. Stay safe, though. Don't be stupid. We met some really cool and friendly upperclassmen that were bowling a striking game next to us. Also, things didn't get Xtreme until we were about to leave. The bass started to drop and the lights got really crazy as there was a mass exodus of SU students returning bowling shoes and heading for the bus.

Breaking the Winter, West Coast Style

It is so nice to be home. Here's what's been up in my life.

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners

On Twitter December 18, 2012: JUST SECURED AN INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEW AND TOUR OF GOODBY SILVERSTEIN & PARTNERS AD AGENCY.

Back at school, I was trying to get a shadowing day at an advertising agency for winter break. A few meetings and e-mails later, I posted that tweet up top there. Another step closer to the future.

Okay so here were some of my impressions:
-Everyone was super super busy. The lady I was meeting up with had to push back our meeting time (half an hour, no big deal). But the ad business seemed like a ton of meetings and phone calls.
-My contact told me that they chose to major in advertising by process of elimination just because the other majors in Newhouse didn't seem like a good fit. I found this interesting.
-My contact also told me to intern in something that I was really passionate about, like a hobby, while I still could and before I had to get a job. This was enlightening.
-They suggested I check out the strategic emphasis based on previous experience ( the Breezeway Cafe, entrepreneurship stuff, networking, etc.).
-I got a quick tour of the building (which was MAJORLY CLASSY). The building is six stories and it looks over the Coit Tower side of San Francisco.
Overall, going to Goodby was an enriching experience. I'm still wondering about my major. I really like studying advertising though. I'll see how things go after ADV 206. My trombone section leader, Tom Buswell, was an ad major. He told me to take an actual ad class before I made any hasty decisions.
It was nice to get my feet wet. These 'Cuse connections are amazing.

And Afterwards

I left the agency feeling like I got a lot accomplished and that I had plenty more thinking it do about my education and future life. As I was searching for a fancy cafe to get an artsy mocha, some kids pushed past me to get to a truck that was giving out free Monster energy drinks. I got a better look at these kids and realized that they were all my theater and band buddies from my high school. We froke out together in reunion and they made me go ice skating with them. Overall, a win of a Thursday.

Hiking Around

What would a break be without some proper outdoor adventure? I told my dad on Christmas Eve that I wanted to go on a hike. Of course, it would be semi-apocalypsing outside. Rain was falling and wind was blowing in every direction. We decided to head back home after an hour of dodging falling trees and slopping through muddy waterfalls.

Livin' it up in the pouring rain.

War paint. Every time.

Cataract Trail in Marin
I also got to catch up with my buddy on the trail down the street from my house. Local treasures, people. Get on it. Go out an explore.

Mt. Tamalpais as seen from El Sobrante.
My lovely little town of Pinole.

Things to do in the dark on top of a huge hill. Long exposure.

Live and Local Music

My dad's 2012 resolution was to go to as many live and local performing art shows that we could find and afford.

The Medicine Ball Band in Sausalito
The line into the Fillmore in San Francisco!
All the show posters in 2012
Trombone Shorty!
Trombone celebrities. Can't handle it.
The Fillmore is a must-go destination for music fans in San Francisco (shout out to Daisy!). The staff is really friendly and you get free posters afterwards. Downside? My shoes are sticky with beer.

Haha, Instagram filter. Major hip.
Afterwards, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and visited Angel Island to check out the city at night. I love my family.

The Millerz!

Probably the coolest statue I've ever seen. Also, haduken.
I hope everyone is having a wonderful and restful break! Go out and do stuff! Let me know what you've been up to. Tweet @emiller2016 or comment around.

End of the Semester

 Long time, no post, eh?

You know why?

I WAS STUDYING FOR FINALS. GIMME A BREAK.

Finals week was no joke. I promised myself I would spend my time on the computer studying and referencing study guides (and hitting up FaceBook for therapeutical doses of friend activity).

ACADEMICS

Spanish has always been one of my favorite classes. Thanks to my wonderful professor, I continued to pursue a langauge and a culture that I respect very much. I'm going to try to get more into conversational Spanish.

One of my fave classes this semester was Entrepreneurship and Emerging Ventures. This class offered a good amount of connections and skills that I can use right away. I signed up for another entrepreneurship class next semester. This class introduced me to the Breezeway Cafe as well. And that's where I am today.

Astronomy = super inspiring. A lot of people found this class to be a pain in the rear, but being the positive ball of light, I really enjoyed this class. Here's what I wrote down in my notebook about this class: "Take classes that interest and inspire you. You'll never be sleepy. It's a great thing to be on the edge of your seat the entire time."

My first Newhouse class was Communications and Media. I encourage every person who can to take this class. Why? Well, it's about our culture in media and how it affects society. It is an introductory course to all eight majors within Newhouse. Also, the textbook was the best book I've read all year. This class was fun but it was also a HUGE challenge. That's what made it a college class.

I felt like I had another shot at math in college so I took Probability and Statistics. Unfortunately, my teacher and I didn't really connect and I was not very enthusiastic about math all semester. Nonetheless, with the encouragement and tutoring of my fellow floor mates, I grasped the material for all the exams. I am so glad that I only had to take one math course for my entire college career.

Lastly, my First Semester Newhouse Advisory Class helped a lot no matter my differences with the students in my group. My faculty advisor was a gem. It is critical to visit your faculty advisor for any questions or concerns you have with your academics. They know their stuff and they are there to help you. Take advantage of people that reach out to you.

NEWHOUSE

Everyone has their school. I am proud to be a part of Newhouse, the most prominent school of public communications in the entire country.  I wrote a little bit about Newhouse in my notebook in the beginning of the semester:

"I had no idea how repectable my school was until I woud tell people I was a Newhouse student. They would then raise their eyebrows, jut out their lower lip and nod approvingly. I call this getting the Newhouse Nod.

We're elite, over-achieving, intelligent, and driven.

I now understand the Newhouse Nod. It's something to be proud of."

This is not to say that non-Newhouse students aren't up to par. I know plenty of undecided, iSchool, Whitman, Arts and Sciences, and School of Education students that are brilliant. I'm just saying that I respect my school and I'm glad to be a part of it.

MY MAJOR

I am a registered Advertising major at Newhouse. So far as a freshman, this means nothing. I talked to a lot of people that I trust and respect and they told me to actually take an advertising class before I decide whether or not to stick with that major. The thing is, I find advertising fascinating. It's a great thing to study. But, I don't believe in corporate consumerism and capitalism. Also, I think that advertising has a crazy influence on society. I don't see myself as someone that would spend their career trying to make people buy half-off milkshakes at a fast food place. This isn't me.

HOWEVER...

I remember something very important that the Dean of Newhouse said at convocation. She told all the freshmen that your major does not brand you and put a stamp on your head that says, "This person will do this for the rest of your life." Newhouse majors provide students with skills and knowledge that that student chooses to apply however they decide. It makes sense and it is something to keep ready on the mind.

FRIENDS

My friends think that I am a blubbering softie when I talk about them. This is true.

I love the people I've met this semester. First, I don't know what I would've done without my superb floor mates. The fourth floor of DellPlain made transitioning into college so much easier than it could've been. They are readily available neighbors that are full of stories, knowledge, and genuine caring that they do not hesitate to share.

Then there's my circle. We may not have a clever acronym that includes all of our initials, but I trust these people with everything. I love all their different interests which broadens my mind and my experiences. The coolest thing about them is that they are all so different. I remember I asked them if we were a clique, what would we be. The verdict? Superheroes.

FUTURE PLANS

All in all, my first semester exceeded my expectations. I had a full college experience in just one semester. Who knows how the next seven have in store?

I am signed up for seven classes and 16 credits for the spring. Until then, I am enjoying a restful, relaxing winter break with my lovely parents (still waiting on Connor to get home). I am incredibly fortunate with the life I have now. Things are going well.

*  *  *  *

There are more adventures to come, I promise. It's 7AM and I am heading out to go hiking for the first time since I've been back. A lot has happened in the first week of vacation. Stay tuned.

Stay syrious.

Before I Begin...

Here we go, an advertising guest speaker from Nike! Dan Sheniak is a 1996 SU Alum and is currently the Global Communications Planning Director for Nike.

This is my first live blog, as I will be documenting this experience as it happens in front of me. Hooray for second row digital note-taking! I'm also keeping up on the #sheniak trend on Twitter.

Tweeting with Johnny!

"You're probably trying to understand where to go with your future. I was just like you." Story of my life.

To start, Dan told us to go get lost for a month whether it is around Europe or in the States. Symbolic? Maybe. Run wild, but don't forget your place.

Dan works for the Weiden+Kennedy ad agency which provides an environment that inspires people to create the best work of their lives. Their goal is to break the conventions of traditional advertising.

So anyway, Dan says that Nike is a brand for everybody, after all, "if you have a body, you're an athlete." The audience is everyone. The ads for Nike are geared to get consumers to have a meaningful relationship with athletes based on emotions that push people forward.

One of my favorites that Dan shared with us.

What are some of these emotions?

  • Inspiration
  • Playful
  • Innovative
  • Provocative (these are deep and kind of scary)
  • Soulful
  • Timely
  • Entertaining
Add pop culture to your work. Cultural influences add a LOT to an ad. That's what makes it exciting and fun. Get inspired by modern movies, music, and internet trends. This will allow you to capture the imagination of others and take an ad to places people would never expect.

Pop culture, gruh.

All right, the provocative ads freak me out. The first one showed a bunch of kids telling the camera that they will be a better and healthier person if they were allowed to play sports. The second one was LeBron James saying that he was not a role model. He has fame and wealth. The last shot, he asked, "Should I be who you want me to be?" The last one was of an obese boy jogging. The last clip read, "Find your greatness."  The ads are really different and really powerful.

Here's a soulful ad. I like this one.

Bouncing beats

And another.

Women power!

So next we checked out the case study for Nike's pupper campaign with LeBron and Kobe puppets. The innovative stories captivated audiences and made these ads go viral on YouTube. These inspired parodies all over the world. This is know as the MVPuppets campaign.

This is adorable

All of these emotions make ads send out the right message at the right time. It creates a vibrant Nike voice.

The world is definitely changing, and it is really exciting getting into the communications industry. I still don't know where I'm going when it comes to my professional future. But hey, let's focus on now. It IS exciting studying communications because we're learning about what is happening NOW and what is GOING to happen later.
@ the Herg Auditorium

Communications is also all about self expression. It's all about storytelling. Check out this blog. I mean, how do you think of me? What point am I trying to get across?

Well, things are getting pretty deep here so it's time I bow out. But remember this: advertising isn't always about trying to sell a product. It's about creating an image for a brand that people will be able to relate to. It's about being inspiring, playful, innovative, provocative, soulful, timely, and entertaining.

Good job, Nike. You've been graced with an awesome SU alum. Dan Sheniak, thanks for your wise words.

Finding the Rhythm

Snow is falling upwards right now.

Some updates:
  • Visited my bro at Sarah Lawrence.

  • Went thrift shopping with the SLC gals.
Beacon's Closet!
  • Probably slept for 3 days straight.
  • Visited my Aunt Sue in Queens.
  • Met up with the Pinole guys in New York City (Alex from UPenn, Arzhang from NYU, and Zeke from U of Rochester).
Where's Zeke...
  • Hit up NY MoMA.
  • Visited the "white" side of my family for Thanksgiving.
Overall, a win of a vacation. Connor has enlightened me of the wonders of waking up early and seizing the day starting at 7:30AM each day. I tried it today. I might nap soon.

It is finally snowing up here. I am freaking out and the only comfort I'm getting is people telling me that I need a bigger jacket.

View from my window.

I'm very stoked that I am getting more productive as final draw nearer. I have less than three weeks here until I head home for Winter Break. My astronomy buddy, Jeff, and I got our take-home labs back and we were quite content with our scores.

After my Astronomy lab, I got some time to enjoy the school newspaper, the Daily Orange. Some cool things I read:
  • Chancellor Nancy Cantor gave an SU alum Saudi Arabian prince (who is also an astronaut) the Chancellor's Medal for Outstanding Achievement.
  • SU Football and Basketball are both kicking major booty.
  • The Syracuse University National Trial Team won the National Civil Trial Competition in California last week.

I love the Daily Orange.

SU alum, Daniel Sheniak, Nike's Global Communications Planning Director is speaking tonight at Newhouse. More on that later. Until then, stay warm and go orange!

PS: Enjoy a video of my subway ride to the bus station.

Filled With Hot Air

Hitting up the pre-Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! The balloon inflation event is a day before Thanksgiving and a ton of New Yorkers head into town to check out their favorite characters. However, all these balloons are netted down on the ground which is both sad and lightweight creepy. Check out the pics!

The crowds!

Streets closed off for the jams.

Rosenzsweig would be proud of that moon.

So much love.

Check out that lovely goose. In my belly.

Ay-o Spongebob.

Poor poor Pikachu.

Humble Uncle Sam.

Spider Man!

Dat Kung Fu Panda!

Charlie Brown in his natural habitat.
Smarf! (which is a Smurf with attitude)
This makes me so sad.

It is totally not easy being green.

Watch out guys. Hello Kitty is on an airplane this year.

Signature star.

The news gotta cover that.

TEDDY ROOSEVELT LOOKING LIKE A BOSS.

Heading back to Queens!

Reppin SU. Always.
